In the South Gallery we are featuring the work of Michael Amar. Amar has been exhibiting with the Gallery since the 1990’s. It has been over ten years since Amar has presented a new body of work here. This work entitled ‘A Sense of Nature’ is composed of a number of large-scale abstract paintings, 6’ x 6’. They are breathtakingly beautiful. Their surfaces are muscular and intensely dynamic. The paintings have a colour-field quality about them yet they are much more. The sense of space is almost acoustic in nature and the colour palette echoes this optical play between the 2-D pictorial surface and the illusion of 3-D space.
McDermott has created two distinct bodies of work. ‘Paper’ is a selection of drawings made by collaging letraset letters on sheets of paper. The works are lyrical abstracts that are fully resolved aesthetic gems. The ‘Wax’ works are wax casts with imbedded fragments. They as well have a lyrical aesthetic that echoes and compliments the works on paper.
