RAY MEAD – A Survey: Works from 1950’s – 1990’s
Opening Reception Saturday, October 4th, 2014, 2pm – 6pm
exhibition runs: October 4th – October 29th, 2014
Christopher Cutts Gallery is pleased to announce an upcoming survey of one of Canada’s finest abstract painters. As an original member of Painters Eleven, Mead developed a direct and striking visual language, which continued to grow and expand, over the following decades.
Mead’s canvases are often characterized by rich fields of colour activated by the strategic placement of his personal iconographic marks. His paintings possess a contemplative elegance, which upon meditation, reveal a rich aesthetic experience.
The exhibition offers a look into the evolution of a remarkable painter. It captures Mead’s artistic development throughout his practice with unique pieces spanning five decades. Highlighted in this survey are works created during Mead’s involvement with Painters Eleven, as well as, a selection of works representing increasingly rare series and experiments in style.
Ray Mead was born in Watford, UK in 1921 and immigrated to Hamilton, Ontario in 1946. He became a part of Painters Eleven during the group’s formation in 1953 and remained a prolific and inspired member until their formal disbanding in 1960. He remained an avid painter up until his death in the fall of 1998.
