The Christopher Cutts Gallery is delighted to announce the opening of an exhibition by Toronto based artist Mat Brown. Mat has been exhibiting with the gallery for the past 10 years. Nevertheless, this is the gallery’s first one-man exhibition. An Ontological History is a continuation of Mat’s keen analysis of the history of the world from its most elementary life form i.e. bacteria through the evolutionary development of higher life forms such as reptiles, mammals and homo sapien sapiens. The first chapter in Brown’s illustrated history dealt with the evolution of the animal kingdom. That body of work in its entirety was exhibited at the Museum of Canadian Contemporary Art, Toronto in 2011.
The work presently on exhibit is the beginning of the next chapter in Brown’s investigation of the evolution of humankind. The exhibition’s title An Ontological History, suggests that Mat’s idea of mankind’s history (worldview) is much more than a linear perspective of the passing of time. His works incorporate metaphors to underscore the evolution of humanity. Such as the integration of biblical metaphors to illustrate man’s migration from equatorial habitats to more Northern and cooler locations, as well as the journey from a hunter-gatherer nomadic existence to sedentary agricultural based communities. The work reads like a grand graphic novel exquisitely and laboriously executed. They are both visually and narratively rich in aesthetics and meaning.
