ELDON GARNET: Garden of Hell on Earth
Opening Reception Saturday, March 5, 2 – 6PM
exhibition runs: Mar. 5 – Mar. 30, 2016
Christopher Cutts Gallery is proud to present our 8th solo exhibition of works by Eldon Garnet. Garden of Hell on Earth consists of 13 large-scale, colour photographs.
Portrayed is a world collapsed; a landscape of burnt remains covered by a thin layer of white ash. Within this wasteland the naked inhabitants struggle to survive and rebuild. Garnet has developed a unique aesthetic language best described as poetic. He constructs a series of photographs to frame and illuminate abstract narratives about current social, political, and economic environments. Like Garnet’s early productions, this series suggests unlikely shifts of reference. The colour and light associated with ‘typically appealing’ images are utilized within images that are base and dirty. Through appropriating and critiquing figure-based narrative work, Garnet constructs a striking future world.
“What kind of aspiration is born from ashes? Garden of Hell on Earth groans from Garnet’s passionate appetite for the wages of need and its dividends of fear. Here, in his newest work—part parable, part passion-play—Eldon Garnet holds out a handful of dust. “We’re lonely organisms,” he says. “We can’t share pain.””
