Richard Stipl

Richard Stipl is a Czech-born artist raised and educated in Canada with an Honors Diploma from the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD University) (1992). Currently he lives and works in Canada and the Czech Republic. He has received a Governor General’s Award and has been awarded grants from both the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts. His work has been exhibited internationally in galleries in Toronto, Montreal, New York, Miami, Berlin, Los Angeles, Madrid, Stuttgart, the Czech Republic, and more. Additionally, he has been represented at numerous international art fairs including Art Basel Miami, The Armory Show, Art Brussels, Art Chicago, and Art Berlin. His work is held worldwide in public and private collections.

Richard Stipl’s artistic career began with painting and hyperrealism.  However, he began to find the painting medium restrictive and later shifted towards sculpture. His work centers on a fascination with the human body, using his own body as a model for focused considerations on the nature of self-representation. Although Stipl acts as a physical model, he does not view his work as self-portraiture, instead seeing his body as merely one possible prototype from which to work. Often, his sculptures include tattoos and corporate logos, expressing a kind of art within the art and drawing attention to external modes of expression.

Richard Stipl (b. 1968, Czech Republic)
