Ron Martin

Ron Martin is a Canadian abstract artist, curator, and writer born in London, Ontario in 1943.  He began working in a studio with fellow Canadian artist, Murray Favro, in 1964 and had his first solo exhibition at Toronto’s Jack Pollock’s gallery in 1965. Martin’s work is influenced by Greg Curnoe, Marcel Duchamp, and Kurt Schwitters. He is considered to be a figure in London Regionalism, a Canadian art movement that sought to find art within their own locality. Martin’s work has been widely exhibited across Toronto. Internationally, his artwork has also been displayed in New York, Germany, Japan, and France. In 2012, he was awarded Canada’s Governor General’s Award in Visual Media and Arts.

Ron Martin’s work usually encompasses a series of paintings. In 1972, he created “Bright Red Paintings”, a monochromatic group of vibrant pieces. Additionally, he made the “Black paintings” in 1974 to 1981. These series utilized various painting techniques from pouring, scraping, brushwork, and finger painting on flat surfaces. His creative process has been described as a time limited and unconscious operation which is why his pieces have often been connected to psychoanalytic thought with a strong focus on the actualization of the painting. The artist has been working with Christopher Cutts since 1992. His last solo exhibition “Conclusions And Transfers” and “Conclusions and Transpositions” shown from March to April 2018, juxtaposed two different series he made in 1968 and 2001-2002.
