Dana Holst

Dana Holst is a Canadian artist based in and working from Edmonton, Alberta. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Waterloo in 1995. Her work has been shown in numerous Canadian galleries including the Art Gallery of Alberta, The Reach Museum, and the Art Gallery of Guelph. In 2011, Holst was selected as Associate Visual Artist for the Théâtre Français in Ottawa. Her work can be found in many public and private collections including the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, The Agnes Etherington Art Centre of Queen’s University, the Art Bank Collection, the Colart Collection, and the Glenbow Museum.

Working primarily in figurative painting and drawing, Dana Holst’s work is an ongoing investigation into the human experience, focusing on the feminine self and its nebulous place within society. Holst is particularly interested in exploring the emotional lives of young women who are engaged in the process of building their identities, discovering their sexuality and learning about the world. Identity, performance, and power relations feature heavily in Holst’s portraiture, often delving into darker realms and considering the relationship between innocence and experience.
