Sherri Hay

Sherri Hay is a self-taught artist currently based in and working from Tkaranto. She has a wide-ranging artistic practice involving sculpture, installation, video, performance, and theatrical design. Hay’s work has been exhibited in institutions such as the Museum of Canadian Contemporary Art and the Art Gallery of Ontario, as well as being held in many significant collections including the West Collection in the United States of America and the Zabludowicz Trust in the United Kingdom. She has also participated in Nuit Blanche Toronto. Hay’s work is frequently shown at Christopher Cutts Gallery as part of both group and solo exhibitions.

Sherri Hay’s practice has long focused on time, relationships and change. Her work is influenced by her theatrical collaborations, and her sculptural works can be considered as performances in their own right, produced among artist, object, and viewer. She is interested in the agency of objects, and in the relationship that emerges from human-object interaction and collaboration. Her works speak to a reciprocity among object, artist/object and viewer that emerges through extended engagement. Many of Hay’s sculptural works have components of movement or action, driving viewers to be present with the work as it exists and evolves over a specific moment in time. Ultimately, she is motivated by how presence and attunement to someone/something is a path to empathy and how empathy can induce a more equitable ecology.
