Janieta Eyre

Janieta Eyre is a British-born photographer currently living and working in Toronto, Canada. She graduated in 1995 from the Ontario College of Art and Design (now OCAD University).  In 1995, she took up photography professionally. Her work has been exhibited domestically and internationally, and is located in the permanent collections of multiple institutions including the National Gallery of Canada, the Musee D’Art Contemporain, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the National Gallery of Iceland. Eyre has participated in the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival and has received multiple awards for her photographic work including the Duke and Duchess of York Award in Photography and the Chalmers Award.

Distinctive of Janieta Eyre’s practice is her auto-portraiture where she often depicts herself as a set of twins. In using her body as the subject of the image as well as the creator, her images subvert the typical gendered objectification of female photographic subjects and challenge the ways in which personal identities and self-projections might be imprisoning. Her work is heavily concerned with ideas of mimesis and twinning, and how those notions might speak to a distinction between body and spirit and to a sense of performed identity. Although she is physically the subject of the works as well as the creator, Eyre has asserted that the images do not represent her, but rather “whoever is borrowing my body, or whomever I lend it to.” The true subjects of her work are fleeting and unknown characters, who come through the artist. The medium becomes both producer and model.
