Matthew Carver

Matthew Carver is a Canadian painter currently based out of and working from Paris, Ontario. He received his Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts from York University (1992) and his Master’s from the University of the Arts in London with Distinction (2005). He has earned numerous awards for his work including the Royal Bank of Canada Painting Prize and the Canadian Emerging Artist prize. His work has been exhibited in Canada, where he is represented by Christopher Cutts Gallery, as well as internationally, including at the Canadian Embassy in Japan and at the Cairo Biennale. His work is also held in numerous private collections. Carver is also an art writer and he has been featured in publications such as Asian Art News, Canadian Art, and The Globe and Mail

Matthew Carver spent a decade abroad in London, Berlin, Beijing, Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore, travelling with and for his art. He became interested in contemporary Asian art and art culture and in the intersections between the East and the West resulting from long colonial histories and more recent cultural interests and exchanges. He is concerned with the pervasiveness of “modernism” as a signifier of power and elite identity. Carver feels that art should be a vehicle for resistance and disruption, not only in subject but also in its production, its style, and its references. His works challenge viewers to engage, look closely, puzzle through visual challenges, and decode deeper meanings.

Matthew Carver (c. 1968, Canada)
