Claus Carstensen

Claus Carstensen is a Danish contemporary artist, curator, poet, writer, and former professor based in Copenhagen. He followed in the footsteps of his relatives in becoming a painter, and was surrounded by abstract paintings since the beginning of his life. Carstensen studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1977 to 1983 and he began his career in 1979. Since then, he has exhibited all over the world, representing his country at the Sydney Biennale in 1992, the Sao Paolo Biennale in 1994, and the Venice Biennale in 1997. Carstensen has also been commissioned by the University of Copenhagen, Danish Parliament, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Denmark.

As poetry was Claus Carstensen’s first means of artistic expression, he seeks to work through dialogue, working each piece with the text in mind just as much as the motif and vice versa. Through this, he often works with mixed media materials. Starting his work as a collage, made up of sketches, pamphlets, and various images, he twists the images through photocopying. The use of false lights, colour banding, and nocturnal backgrounds shape the mood of his pieces. As a result, each of his works share a complex story within distorted punk and urban imagery. Carstensen has been with Christopher Cutts Gallery since 1997 and has had his works exhibited in shows like “A.M.E.R.I.C.A. A.T. W.O.R.K.” in 2004.
