The Christopher Cutts Gallery is proud to announce the release of “Of Light and Darkness,” featuring Rae Johnson’s captivating landscape paintings from 1988 – 2009.
“[The landscapes] are observations of the cycles of light and darkness, the movement of the wind and the elements over the sky, earth, and water. Natural Phenomenon has taken the place of Human Narrative. The new work is more poetic and less literal. I hope the viewer can experience the emotional content of this work on a visceral level, like listening to music.” — Rae Johnson, 1989
This publication is the companion to the 2020 catalogue “Angels and Monsters.”
In early 2020, after Johnson’s diagnosis with ALS, the gallery planned a two-exhibition survey of her career. The first part, Angels and Monsters, featured the artist’s figurative work, while the second, Of Light and Darkness, was to feature her dramatic large-scale landscape paintings.
Johnson died in May 2020, before the landscape exhibition opened, and the show was postponed to the following year due to the pandemic.
This catalogue was put on hold until now. We invite you to join us for the reception and catalogue launch on Thursday, January 16, 2025, from 5 – 8 pm.
To accompany the catalogue, we’re presenting a short exhibition of Johnson’s enthralling landscapes, only on display January 11 – 25, 2025.
