Andrew Rucklidge

Andrew Rucklidge lives and works in Toronto.  He teaches in the Department of Painting and Drawing at The Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD University).  He received his Master’s Degree in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art in London in 2003. In 2013, he received both the K.M. Hunter Visual Artist Award and the Laura Ciruls Painting Award. Since graduating from Chelsea College, he has shown internationally at The New Contemporaries and Store Gallery in London, UK; John Connelly Presents in New York; YYZ Gallery and Christopher Cutts Gallery in Toronto; among many other galleries. His work has also been represented at numerous international art fairs, including The Armoury, NADA Miami, Volta Basel, Art Chicago, Art Cologne, DC Dusseldorf as well as the Scope Art fairs and Art Toronto. Rucklidge’s work is held in many collections including UBS London, Zabludowicz 176 Collection London, Kunstmuseum Gotland Sweden, Soho House London and Toronto, Google, Bank of Montreal, and Scotiabank.

Andrew Rucklidge has described his paintings as “experiments” in a literal sense. For the majority of his artistic career, he has produced his own paints with his scientific background informing his artistic process. The interactions between pigments and mediums are a part of the work, even when the experiments yield unexpected results. His works often manifest as landscapes due to the nature of his organic pigments ー earth returns to earth. Rucklidge’s work is engaged in global conflict and environmental change, tracing the ways they engage with and produce each other. He sees this not as an exclusively contemporary phenomenon, and he is influenced by the work of many significant historical landscape artists who engaged with the environment in a time of global expansion and rapid social development.

Andrew Rucklidge (b. 1968, Canada)
