Claude Tousignant

Claude Tousignant is an acclaimed Quebecois artist born and based in Montreal. He graduated from the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts School of Art and Design in 1951. Additionally, he was one of the last students to study abroad at the now defunct Parisian art school, Académie Ranson in 1952. His works were inspired by avant-garde and modern art theories introduced to him by his teacher, Canadian Artist Gordon Webber, who introduced him to the works of the Bauhaus, Mark Rothko, and László Moholy-Nagy. His work has been celebrated across Canada and overseas, exhibiting at New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the 8th Biennale of São Paulo, Brazil both in 1965. Tousignant was awarded the Officer of the Order of Canada in 1976, and the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2010.

Claude Tousignant’s work contributed to the development of geometric abstraction in Canada. Within his work he works from a basic structure that is later altered and further refined through the creation of a relationship between form and colour. Recently, Tousignant has been focused on dynamic monochrome paintings and geometric aluminum sculptures. He has been working with Christopher Cutts since 1995, and a solo show called “Claude Tousignant: A Selection” was exhibited in April to June 2017.
