Pat McDermott

Pat McDermott is a Canadian artist based in Kingston, Ontario. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from York University in Toronto (1989). He has primarily shown at galleries across Canada including Christopher Cutts Gallery in Toronto and Agnes Etherington Gallery in Kingston, as well as at Hardwalls Contemporary Arts Centre in Buffalo, New York. His work has also been represented at international art fairs including Art Toronto and Positions Berlin. McDermott has received multiple Ontario Arts Council grants. His work is held in the collections of Agnes Etherington Gallery and TD Bank.

Pat McDermott’s artistic practice is concerned with categorization, representation, labeling, and its effects on viewing and comprehension. Through his work, he repeatedly raises the question: what might it look like to see and experience without the moderation of these constructs? McDermott sees a disconnect between seeing and understanding, particularly with how we have learned to see and understand, and seeks to disrupt that programming by producing works that bring viewers into an active role and spark deeper connection and consideration of the art in front of them.
