The Christopher Cutts Gallery is excited to announce our upcoming exhibition, “David Bolduc, The Journey,” which will survey five decades of the influential Canadian painter’s career. This exhibition follows Bolduc’s artistic journey from his early minimalist constructions to his signature central image paintings, which he continued to revisit and evolve until his untimely death in 2010.
Bolduc’s work, known for its vibrant use of colour, and influenced by his travels and the work of modernists before him, has made a profound contribution to Canada’s art landscape. “David Bolduc, The Journey” will present excerpts of Bolduc’s artistic evolution, moving from colour blocking to bold impasto strokes of paint on contrasting multicoloured backgrounds.
The exhibition will feature a selection of paintings from the 1960s to the 2000s, notably an Untitled wall-mounted construction from 1967 that was previously shown with Toronto gallerist Carmen Lamanna; Two (1979), an early example of Bolduc’s central image; Stupa (1995), a freestanding wooden construction; and other noteworthy paintings depicting both geometric and organic variations of his iconic vertical form.
Of the central image that occupies most of his compositions, Bolduc stated that the symbol originally began “as the hands of a watch, both of them pointing straight upwards towards midnight.” Grounded by this symbol, Bolduc’s paintings were typically symmetrical, but he would expand into organic asymmetrical compositions in his horizontal canvases. This exhibition will offer viewers the opportunity to see varying iterations of Bolduc’s signature motif.
“David Bolduc, The Journey” invites viewers to engage with the radiant hues, rich textures, and innovative modernist approaches that define the artist’s practice. The exhibition is comprised of pieces from private Canadian collections, reflecting the artist’s enduring relevance in Canadian art history.
Join us in celebrating Bolduc’s incredible career at the opening reception on March 29, from 2 – 6 pm.
“David Bolduc, The Journey” will run from Saturday, March 29, 2025 – Wednesday, April 23, 2025.
