The Christopher Cutts Gallery is pleased to announce its second solo exhibition of work by Xiao Guo Hui, titled In Search of Lost Time: A Tribute to Marcel Proust.
His choice of medium is egg tempera, which references early renaissance Italian painting. Yet they are contemporary works, which though obviously allegorical in narrative content maintain a place in both the past and present epoch.
In this new body of work Xiao extends his narrative journey steeped in a hybridization of classical and contemporary painting. As the title of the exhibition suggests Xiao’s work like that of Marcel Proust draws from his own past. His paintings are allegorical stories of his own life. They approach the task of releasing from the buried world of unconscious memory the ever-living reality, of which habit makes us blind.
