Christopher Cutts Gallery, 21 Morrow Avenue, Toronto, ON, M6R 2H9
From April 11 to May 14th the Christopher Cutts Gallery will be exhibiting the latest series of work by Toronto artists Andrew Rucklidge and Drew Simpson.
The Interiority Complex is a group of lavish, Baroque surrealist paintings, each one a conjoined composite of thirteen individually framed panels. The effect is a hyper-fragmented, hermetically sealed microcosmos. In the words of the artist, “these works are groupings of individual things, but compartmentalized and isolated in darkness … forming a fragmented constellation of still life forms quivering in the ether.” Simpson paints with an attention to detail and form that in its mischievous, yet frank reverence of traditional painting is disarmingly novel. The pieces reference and often directly re-present masterworks of the Dutch Golden Age.
Drew Simpson b.1977 attended both the Ontario College of Art and Design and the Toronto School of Art. Early in his career, he exhibited paintings in numerous group shows, as well as curated for Mix Magazine and Mind Control Gallery. In recent years, his work has been featured at several high profile international art fairs, including Scope (New York, London, Miami), Art Chicago, ARCO and Foire internationale d’art contemporain. This is his second solo exhibit at the Christopher Cutts Gallery.
