DAVID CANTINE
Yesterday Today

Opening Reception Thursday, June 7th, 6-9 pm
Exhibition runs: June 2nd – July 7th

Christopher Cutts Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition by senior Edmonton based painter David Cantine.

The exhibition titled Yesterday Today investigates works from Cantine’s past, specifically his intense four-decade long exploration of an abstracted still-life consisting of four discs placed on a tonal picture plane. As well as contemporary works, which depart from Cantine’s rigorous systemic spherical colour constructs.

Cantine’s still-life began as a pair of apples and their shadows. He states that “In the natural world, and in conventional and abstract pictures, colour is descriptive. It adheres to and identifies the shape or form presented. I have tried to remove colour from this descriptive use so as to make it structural, specifically, to make it function as depth/space. Every colour seems to me to want to position itself as a point in space. My work orchestrates the relationships of colours ideally and necessarily positioned.”

Cantine’s more contemporary work reintroduces the traditional construct of painting. Once again, there is evidence of the painted gesture, implementing line, form and overlap. Somewhat full circle for Cantine whose career was born of the painterly ideologies which he challenged.
