“Eyes of a Child” combines Daisuke Takeya’s long-term work as both a painter and an art educator. The book reflects on how creativity forms in childhood, shaped by early school experiences, memories, and the way adults choose to look at children’s art. The book is structured around two related bodies of work.
“Into the Eyes of a Child” presents oil portraits of Takeya’s students, focusing on the young artists themselves.
“From the Eyes of a Child” features Takeya’s reproductions of his students’ finished artworks, preserving their original gestures, colours, and decisions.
These works explore the relationship between seeing and being seen, and question how children’s art is often misunderstood or underestimated. Eyes of a Child invites viewers to slow down and take children’s creativity seriously, not as a stage to move past, but as something complete in itself.
