Xiao Guo Hui

Chinese-born artist Xiao Guo Hui merges the timelessness, precision, and style of early Renaissance paintings with the serenity and equilibrium of early Chinese art. He seeks to capture and explore the theme of “play” as a core element of humanity. Austere backgrounds with striking yet reduced colour palettes allow the painter’s subjects to shine.

These subjects are slightly surreal, ambiguous actors who provoke intrigue, yet through the artist’s touch and choice of medium – egg tempera on linen – they are infused with a delicate softness even when appearing ominous. Abundant in his works are sly, knowing glances, smirks, and delicate poise that invite the viewer to join Guo Hui’s mysterious playground of the psyche.

The catalogue is 48 pages, with reproductions of 22 works from 2001-2007, some presented with framed details to provide closer glimpses of colour and composition.
