FIVE OF ELEVEN

JANUARY 31 — FEBRUARY 14
TOM HODGSON, KAZUO NAKAMURA, RAY MEAD, WILLIAM RONALD, HAROLD TOWN

“This year marks the gallery’s 40th anniversary. It was in 1986, at the age of 25, that I began my career as an art dealer. I am now officially a senior citizen, and it is hard to comprehend that four decades have gone by. We will kick off the year with an exhibition titled “5/11.”

Early in my career, I had the good fortune to encounter and work with five members of Painters 11. Painters 11 was a collective of Toronto-centred abstract painters who exhibited together from 1953 to 1960. They were a cornerstone of the gallery’s program, and today I still represent the estates of these artists.

The five are Tom Hodgson, Kazuo Nakamura, Ray Mead, William Ronald, and Harold Town. Tom Hodgson, a two-time Canadian Olympian, was the first of Painters 11 whom I met at his Toronto studio. Ray Mead was a British expat who initially came to Canada to train pilots during World War II. Mercurial Harold Town was a talented figure who played a major role in Canadian culture until his untimely death in 1990. Finally, both William Ronald and Kazuo Nakamura would have celebrated their centenaries this year, and we will be showcasing both in the fall.

As you can imagine, it has been an honour for me to know and work with these painters, so it is fitting that we begin our 40th anniversary by celebrating their work.” — Christopher Cutts, 2026

This exhibition will run until February 14th.
