Ed Zelenak

Ed Zelenak was born in 1940 in St. Thomas, Ontario.  He currently lives and works in his studio in West Lorne, Ontario.  He attended the Ontario College of Art and Design (now OCAD University) from 1957 to 1959 and the Fort Worth Art Center in 1960. Zelenak is known as one of Canada’s senior sculptors with a unique ability to manipulate materials to imbue his creations with a sense of spirituality and philosophy.  Zelenak takes a philosophic approach to art and production and integrates the study of culture and semiotics into his works.  His interest in symbols as cultural signposts contributes to his iconography of everyday objects including trees, crosses, stairs, arrows, and circles.  According to Zelenak, the creation of culture becomes how people interact and experience icons and the signified and signifier.

Ed Zelenak’s works are present in national and international collections including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), the Ontario Arts Council, and the Art Gallery of Victoria to name a few.  Internationally, he has collections in Switzerland at the Musee Cantonal de Beaux Arts in Lausanne, Czech Museum of Fine Arts in Prague, and the Chicago Athenaeum.  Zelenak’s first solo exhibit was in 1969 at London Ontario’s 20/20 Gallery.  He has exhibited at Christopher Cutts Gallery in Toronto from 1993 and his most recent exhibit was in 2018 titled “Distant Realms.”  Zelenak has contributed to many group exhibitions from 1961 at the Helbing Gallery in Fort Worth Texas to the most recent Woodstock Art Gallery in 2022 titled “A Moment in Mindfulness.” He has been commissioned most notably by the Toronto Federal Building in 1976 and 1977 as well as other commissions in Ontario and Minnesota.
