Ray Mead

Ray Mead was a Canadian abstract and expressionist painter. He graduated in 1939 from the Slade School of Art in London and he later moved to Canada after World War II. He became exposed to contemporary painting during his travels to the United States. His meeting with Hortense Gordon influenced the trajectory of his art career in Ontario, exhibiting for the first time at the 1950 “Jubilee Year Canadian Art Show,” held in what is now the Art Gallery of Ontario. Both Mead and Hortense would help found the Painters Eleven who aimed to develop a new and modern genre of art in Canada. Collections of his work can be found across Canada.

Ray Mead’s work is a blend of his English arts training with his exposure to modern American abstract and contemporary Canadian art. Inspired by the works of Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline, Mead’s art uses a vigorous and emotive method of painting. This created the expressive strokes on the rigid surface of plywood. His movements throughout the canvas have been noted by art historians like Joan Murray to be “deliberate, yet loose,” in its formations. Towards the end of his life in 1992, Mead was represented by Christopher Cutts Gallery. An exclusive exhibition of Mead’s work, “One From the Vault” was displayed at the gallery from February to March 2019. There, a selection of Mead’s geometric paintings from the mid-to-late 1970’s as well as his expressive painterly artworks from the mid-to-late 1980’s were shown.
